Litter Update – Blue #2

If you haven’t read the original post about Blue Walnut clumping litter go here first.

Well, it seems as if our pride of felines has voted…… they don’t like Blue Walnut clumping litter. Seems as if only one cat is comfortable with making deposits.  That’s not enough when you have 5 cats.  I am disappointed because I really wanted to use this more eco-friendly litter. 😦  So, I have purchased a semi-ton of clay litter and will be transitioning two of the boxes back to a clay litter base.

Now, don’t let my experience dissuade you from trying Blue litter.  I hope your pride will accept it.  I think it is overall a good alternative and better your health and your cats.   The adventure continues……..

Litter Update – new brand

Did some major cleaning of one of the litter boxes the other day (picture below). One of the dreaded chores of cat ownership… do I hear an amen to that? (Curious – How often do you give your litter box a thorough cleaning? ) This box is a Nature’s Miracle box and it’s a very large box, one of the largest I have ever used (well, technically I don’t really “use” it). But the important fact is that the cats seem to really like it a lot!  I highly recommend this box for big cats and high pee-ers. More on that subject in later posts.20130215-173938.jpg Read the rest of this entry »

Litter Update – Blue

Blue’s Walnut Clumping litter. Before I bought this litter I knew it was going to be brown. But it is kind of strange at first when it pours out of the bag. It also has a different odor than the typical clay litter we are all used to. The odor Read the rest of this entry »

Good Resource

Found a really good resource regarding cat pee problems.  I’m not shy about referring you to others; after all, the objective is to find a solution.   I’ve been doing many of the things discussed in the article.  The one thing that makes me sad is that Satchmo might be sad.  I sure hope not.  He seems happy other than the pee issue.  In fact, I think it makes him happy to pee freely about the house.  Anyway, a link for ya……. http://www.catbegood.com/cat-behavior/litter-box-problems/

The Filler

Actually the Litter.  I have been trying different litters…not because I think it’s part of the problem with Satchmo, I don’t think it is, but – trying different ones anyway.  I am really more concerned about our health.  With 5 cats, the dust from the litter is just a little much – has anyone heard of the Dust Bowl of the 1930s??

So, I’ve been doing online research and reading about this and that – wheat vs. corn vs. clay vs. pine.  They all seem to have pros and cons, which makes it hard to decide which is the right litter.  I am currently using the following brands: Tidy Cat for Small Spaces; Fresh Step and Blue Walnut Shell litter.  I am not promoting either of these – no money has exchanged hands for endorsements.  Although a multi-million dollar deal in the sports figure realm could be considered.   More later…

I am also experimenting with boxes.  Do they like covered boxes, open boxes, cardboard, plastic.  I have not invested in the electronic shifter boxes or the new pellet system boxes.  Again, I’ve read pros and cons.

I basically think there is no one perfect solution.  That is why I am on this quest, with my litter scooper raised high ready for the fight to find the solution for this household.  Will it be a mixture of litters I have to concoct myself?  What kind of box?  Will I end up modifying that?  I might end up a chemist or engineer after this.  Which might be a good thing, as I will be looking for a new career soon.

The photo shows two different boxes and two litter types:

Walnut shells are the brown litter; the other box is using Tidy Cat in a disposable card board box.

Pee-Pads

More like carpeting or wallpaper…… you can see from the following pictures the situation as described in my post “The Problem. The Herd.”   The photos of the pee pads on the bookshelf thingies is a new problem.  I know this is a nasty photo, but the truth will set me free!

Pee pads in use. Ick.

The Problem. The Herd.

Here’s a little background for you to set the stage. We have 5 cats – Benji (a.k.a. Big Boy), Charlie (Benji’s brother or CharChar), Ella (a.k.a. Baby Girl), Mamma Mia (the new cat – named after a Queen song), and Satchmo (a.k.a. Pee-body, Motorboat, MoMo). You can tell right away who our problem child is – Satchmo.

The problem: Mr. MoMo likes to pee outside the box. And not just near the box but at just about every entryway of the house – the door to the garage, the two doors to the patio, the window in the dining room, and most recently, the bookshelves in the office/cat room (this is odd).

blahhhht

blahhhht

You say, “Why haven’t you tossed that cat out?” Well, you must not be a crazy cat lady/guy … but imagine you are and tossing Mr. MoMo to the grassy kitty litter box in the suburban-wild is not an option. So we currently invest in a lot of “pee-pads,” Nature’s Miracle solutions, and other homemade miracle cures. This blog-journey will document how my partner and I are handling the issues as they come up. I will blog about the products, tricks, and miracles that work and those that don’t. I will also probably brag about our cat family – because they are so cute, despite the issues.

I also hope to gain some ideas from YOU. They say putting our collective brains together is better than just one brain. I hope that ends up being true for this case, because our carpet is ruined, the two doors will need to be replaced at some later date, and the stock price for pee-pads is going up based on our consumption demand.
